Environmental Sustainability at Amgen Europe

We have demonstrated our commitment to environmentally responsible operations by reducing our impact on the environment in multiple areas of our global business. Sustainable operations are a wise investment, improving efficiency and creating value.

Environmental Sustainability Plan

Amgen periodically creates long-term Environmental Sustainability Plans, which cover the full scope of our business, allowing us to gain a better understanding of our overall environmental impact and integrate sustainability into our products and processes. We are currently operating under the guidance of the 2020 Environmental Sustainability Plan, which covers the period from 2012 to 2020. A plan covering the period 2021 to 2027 is currently under development, and a summary of that plan will be published here when it is finalized.

The 2020 Plan is focused on driving sustainable practices in the areas of research, development and manufacturing; transportation and distribution; commercial operations; sourcing; and products and packaging. As part of our plan, we are committed to achieving specific targets. The Plan, and the targets, are global in nature, covering the vast majority of Amgen’s physical footprint world-wide. This includes the following facilities/operations in Europe:

  • Amgen, Breda (Netherlands)
  • Amgen, Dun Laoghaire (Ireland)
  • Amgen, Cambridge (UK)
  • Amgen, Uxbridge (UK)

We report on progress towards the Environmental Sustainability targets on a global basis (including the performance of the European facilities listed above).

Amgen’s Greenest Green Building in the Netherlands

The newest addition to Amgen’s collection of “green” buildings designed with environmental sustainability as a central feature, is now the most environmentally friendly in the company. This building also earns a place as one of the most green buildings in a country noted for sustainability innovation, the Netherlands.

The Amgen visitor center in Breda is certified with an A++++ label, one of only 80 out of the 98,000 buildings in the Netherlands to carry this high mark for sustainability. What’s more, the building is one of only 8 buildings in the Netherlands to carry a minus energy index (actually sending surplus energy back to the energy grid). The building is the first building in Breda to earn the combination A++++ label.

Features that contribute to this building’s zero-emission status include a 26 kilowatt solar photo voltaic (PV) system, adaptive lighting which modulates the light intensity based on solar position and occupancy, heat-resistant glazing to keep the interior cool in warm months and an innovative ventilation system to optimize heating and air quality in cooler months.

As Amgen continues its efforts to remodel its older facilities to optimize building performance and minimize carbon footprint, this new building is one of several in Amgen’s portfolio that have earned special recognition for exceptional qualities of energy and water conservation and waste reduction.

With endorsement from senior management and engagement with senior leaders across the organization, Amgen has implemented a global strategy designed to leverage our diversity and create a more inclusive workplace. Our priorities are:

Global:

  • Increasing the percentage of women in manager and above roles
  • Increasing the percentage of women in senior vice president and above roles, which is also defined as our operating team

United States:

  • Increasing the percentage of African Americans in science titles
  • Increasing the percentage of African Americans and Hispanics in executive director and above roles

This new strategy is intended to help Amgen successfully navigate a complex global marketplace as we bring more medicines to more patients around the world. Amgen is setting goals in order to improve our focus. These goals will also serve as a baseline for measuring our progress toward a more inclusive workplace.

Employee Resource Groups (ERG's) are a tool we use to promote and support as well as illustrate the impact and value that has on our business. There are currently nine Global ERG's at Amgen, all with executive sponsorship, that are organized around a primary diversity dimension. We provide leaders and managers with training and tools to lead a diverse workforce and create an inclusive environment.
